Full Description
An area of post medieval extraction on Knighton Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The feature comprises two small irregular scarped depressions between 9m and 12m long by 5.5m to 11.5m wide. One of the pits has more rectangular edges on some sides and is the deeper of the two. The second pit is more amorphous and shallow and in October 1945 is almost hidden under scrubby vegetation.
The heathland on which the features are situated in 1945 (part of Knighton Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.
The site is under modern housing development on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
