Full Description
A post medieval extractive pit at Knighton Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2). The feature comprises a large irregular scarped pit with a smaller shallow pit flanking this to the southwest.
The feature comprises a large irregular scarped pit up to 116m long by up to 44m wide, with a smaller shallow 18m by 12m pit flanking this to the southwest. The heathland on which the features are situated in 1945 (part of Knighton Heath) is typically scarred by widescale post medieval extraction, which is characteristically shallow but with some areas of deeper extraction also present.
The site is under the edge of modern housing development on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
