Full Description
Banked linear features to the west of Knighton Farm are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1-2).
The features comprise three broad banked linears spread across several historic enclosures recorded on the 1st Edition map (3). The features do not suggest any obvious alignment with, or relationship to, the historic field pattern (3). One short banked linear extends east from the edge of a narrow neck of historic woodland and may be a continuation of a historic field boundary or wood bank.
The features are considered likely to be field boundaries of possible medieval date, although an earlier, perhaps late prehistoric, origin is also possible; the features are situated in the vicinity of a documented Iron Age settlement and field system (MDOs 6966 and 6968) and it is possible some or all of the features may be associated with these.
The majority of the site is under Knighton Golf Course and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
