Summary

A banked linear feature within a large extractive pit possibly known as Canford Pit, Canford Magna, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature is considered likely to be a historic field boundary of possible post medieval origin. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A banked linear feature within a large extractive pit possibly known as Canford Pit, Canford Magna, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The feature is narrow and retilinear in form and extends across the entire width of the northern section of a large historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). In 1946 the feature is within a large extractive pit (MDO41123) but is still extant; the area of extraction extends around 68m southwest of this feature (1).

The feature is considered likely to be a historic field boundary of possible post medieval to perhaps early 20th century origin.

The site is developed as housing on current Google Earth imagery But the southern edge of the estate may respect the field boundary, which may still be extant uner trees but is not visible. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
