Full Description

Ditched and banked linear features on the southwest side of Broadstone Golf Course are visible on aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The features comprise a series of ditched and banked linears that extend as a slightly irregular earthwork west and then southwest from the side of the Southampton and Dorchester railway line; a historic drainage ditch or trackway is recorded leading east from the same point on the other side of the railway line on the OS 1st Edition map, possibly passing under the railway line thus creating a continuous feature on both sides (3). On the east side of the railway line this feature appears to be part of an interlinked system of drainage ditches that probably had a dual function as field boundaries (3).

Two further rectilinear ditches offset the irregular row of linear banks and ditches. The form of these is more rectilinear in nature and they may be drainage ditches of probable post medieval date.

The features may be part of a post medieval drainage system that continues to the east of the railway line.

The site is still part of Broadstone Golf Course on current Google Earth imagery and the features remain visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
