Monument record MDO41099 - Medieval field boundaries, Ashington, Poole

Ditched linear features to the west of Ashington are visible on aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of possible post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Ditched linear features to the west of Ashington are visible on aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The features are narrow and slightly sinuous in form. They correspond with a number of small historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, the curving boundaries of some being almost certainly medieval in origin (3). The features continue the pattern of historic enclosure to the west of Ashington; some of the linear features correspond with dispersed rows of trees recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, suggesting removed field boundaries. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of possible post medievaldate, although an earlier origin is also possible.

The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but with some modern infill of housing. The features are not visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
