Full Description
Banked curvilinear features to the west ofCanford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The features are broad and sinuous in character and they are set broadly parallel to each within a number of large irrgular historic enclosures to the west of Canford Magna, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2) The external slightly sinuous boundaries may be medieval in origin; later rectilinear boundaries dividing these enclosures are probably the result of post medieval re-organisation (2). The features broadly align north to south within these enclosures, with some linear sections set perpendicular to these. Some of the features are fossilised by sections of historic field boundary recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2).
The features may be historic field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a later origin for some of the features is possible.
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery, with some modern boundary changes and cut by the A31 Wimborne bypass . The features are still partially visible in areas of open ground. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
