Full Description
Banked linear features at Canford Magna are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features are broad and slightly sinuous in form. They are situated within the southeast section of a large irregular historic enclosure to the west of Canford Magna, recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and whose slightly sinuous boundaries may be medieval in origin (2).
The features comprise one longer linear feature extending from east to west across the enclosure before turning to run southwest. Two further banked rectilinear features are situated to the southeast of this; one appears truncated by a modern field boundary (1). The features are broadly set on a WNW-ESE axis, parallel or perpendicular to each other and broadly on the same alignment as a historic field boundary to the south.
The features may be historic field boundaries of possible medieval date although a later origin is also possible. The features underlie narrow curvilinear features that may be cultivation marks (MDO41083) of possible medieval date, perhaps associated with an area of relict medieval strip field, although these too may be later in origin.
The site is developed as housing on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
