Full Description

An extensive post medieval drainage system on the north bank of the River Stour to the north of Canford School is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).

The features comprise a series of interlinking linear ditches and banks extending across a number of historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, covering a distance of around 1.5km. The features link with larger drainage ditches also recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, some of which dually function as historic field boundaries (3).

The site is is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery and many of the features remain visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
