Monument record MDO41050 - Possible post medieval field boundary, Parmiter Drive, Leigh, Wimborne Minster

Please read our .

Summary

A banked linear feature in a field to the south of Parmiter Drive, Leigh, is visible on 1940's aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery. The feature may be a historic field boundary of possible post medieval date. As it lies close to the projected line of a Roman road (MDO5439) it is also possible that it is associated with this feature, although a 2015 archaeological evaluation in this field found no traces of any Roman road. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A banked linear feature in a field to the south of Parmiter Drive, Leigh, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).

The feature comprises a broad 14m wide rectilinear bank aligned east to west across the width of a historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The feature is situated adjacent and perpendicular to the suggested western boundary of Leigh Park medieval deer park (MDO5441).

The feature may be a historic field boundary of medieval to post medieval date, or possibly a boundary bank associated with the medieval deer park.

As it lies close to the projected line of a Roman road (MDO5439) it is alternatively possible that it is associated with this feature, although a 2015 archaeological evaluation in this field found no traces of any Roman road (4).

The features comprise ditches and banks that are presumed to be earthworks associated with a late medieval moated manor; the manor is considered to date from at least the 16th century (see NHRE Hob UID 457914).

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
