Full Description
Ditched and banked curvilinear features to the north of Leigh Road, Wimborne Minster, are visible on aerial photographs (1).
Th e features comprise two curvilinear features that align north to south before curving round to the east. The line of the easternmost feature is marked by a row of trees on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The two features are set parallel to each other and they align with historic field boundaries adjacent to the east, forming a number of narrow consecutive enclosures. These enclosures have the appearance of enclosed medieval strip field and the broad curvilinear field boundary bordering them to the north and enclosing the larger area of open ground to the south may well have originally defined an area of medieval open field (1 and 2).
The features are therefore presumed to be historic field boundaries of probable medieval origin.
The site is developed as hsouing on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
