Full Description

Banked linear features to the west of Lake Farm are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (1-3).

The features comprise a series of broad rectilinear banks that are regular in form and arranged along parallel and perpendicular lines on a broadly north-south axis. The features form a 117.5m by 68.5m rectilinear enclosure in the southeast corner of the field adjacent to the west of Lake Farm. The northwest corner of he enclosure is slightly rounded. Two perpendicular banks extend north from the enclosure; the westernmost of these potentially extends beyond the line of the former railway and now current A31 road, where it is visible as a faint cropmark in 1969 and as faint soilmarks in 1973. Within the enclosure there is a further possible banked linear, faintly visible in 1969 and aligned northwest to southeast with a short perpendicular linear extending southwest off this (1-3). Two shorter sections of bank are located at the east end of the linear, offset at angles northeast and southeast (3).

The character of the features suggests possible field boundaries of perhaps medieval to post medieval date but the rounded corner of the enclosure may indicate an earlier origin and these features could alternatively be earthworks associated with the Roman military fort MDO5864.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
