Full Description
A banked linear feature on the Leaze, Wimborne Minster, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature extends southeast from a trackway to the west of the deserted medieval settlement on the Leaze (MDO6243) and potentially contemporary with it; although this is not certain. The feature subsequently crosses the southwest corner of the settlement earthworks, appearing to overlie, and therefore post-date, them. It is not clear from the aerial photographic evidence whether this feature also post-dates an area of probable post medieval narrow ridge and furrow (MDO41023), although is most probably the case . The feature is considered most likely to be a historic trackway of probable post medieval or later date, although an earlier origin is certainly possible.
The site is still open ground on current Google Earth imagery. The area of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow is visible but the feature itself is not evident; it may be superceded by a later trackway on slightly altered route. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
