Full Description
A small sub-circular ditched feature on the Leaze, Wimborne Minster, is visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).
The feature measure 35m by 30m. It is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, where it is shown to be crossed by a historic field boundary whose curvilinear form suggests a potentially medieval origin (2). The feature is one of a series of three that are located along this field boundary (see (MDOs 41019 and 41020) but in the other two cases the features appear to cut the field boundary. In this case the boundary is suggested to post-date this features, although that may be misleading on map evidence alone.
The feature may be a small extractive pit, possibly a gravel pit, potentially post medieval in date but it may be earlier in origin. The feature is still visible on current Google Earth imagery, where it contains water.
The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
