Full Description
A large post medieval extractive pit to the east of Row is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The main feature is elongated and irregular in form and up to 173.6m long by up to 56m wide. It is accessed by an un-metalled road running east from the main road at Row. A smaller irregular pit up to 31m long by up to 23.8m wide is situated adjacent to its south side (1).
The feature is one of a string of extractive pits on Holt Heath and White Sheet Hill. Some of these are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map where they are shown as gravel pits or old gravel pit (2). This pit is not recorded on the OS 1st Edition map but is likely to be a gravel pit as the others are. The OS Mastermap records the feature as 'pit (dis)', suggesting it may have continued in use into the 20th century.
The site is scrubby heathland on current Google Earth imagery. The east end of the feature remains clearly distinct; the body of the feature is no longer visible. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
