Full Description
A large post medieval extractive pit on Holt Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The feature is large and irregular in form and up to 215m long by up to 153m wide. IT straddles both sides of an un-metalled road running from south to north across Holt Heath, to the northeast of what is now Woodhuish Farm.
The feature is one of a string of extractive pits on Holt Heath and White Sheet Hill. Some of these are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map where they are shown as gravel pits or old gravel pit (2). This pit is not recorded on the OS 1st Edition map but is likely to be a gravel pit as the others are.
The site is scrubby heathland on current Google Earth imagery. The feature is not evidently visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
