Full Description
A series of interlinking ditched features to the south of Whitemoor Farm are visible on aerial photographs (1). The features are considered likely to be part of an extensive post medieval drainage system.
The features comprise a number of long narrow rectilinear ditches offset by numerous shorter perpendicular or diagonal ditches. They are situated within a number of irregular historic enclosures recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose curvilinear boundaries suggests predominantly medieval origins (2). The features link into two larger drainage channels also recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, which subsequently feed into the larger stream courses of Uddens Water (2).
The features are presumed to be part of an extensive post medieval drainage system.
The site is partly open fields and partly Whitemoor Lakes on current Google Earth imagery. Many of the features are still visible, altrhough some are lost under Whitemoor Lakes. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
