Full Description
Banked curvilinear features to the northeast of Pilford Farm are faintly visible on aerial photographs (1).
The features are situated within an irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, whose broadly rectilinear boundaries may indicate a post medieval date (2). The features are broad and curvilinear in form and are not out of keeping with some of the wider historic pattern of enclosure, which is likely to be at least medieal in origin; an area of possible medieval open field is suggested to the north of Pilford Farm on the OS 1st Edition map, with subsequent sub-division during the post medieval period (2).
The features may be historic field boundaries, potentially of medieval date, although their form may even suggest a late prehistoric origin. Alternatively, however, these may be features of natural or modern agricultural origin.
The site is still fields on current Google Earth imagery but the features are not visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
