Full Description
A series of interlinking ditched linear features at Furzehill are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features occupy the whole of an irregular historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and whose curvilinear boundaries are potentially medieval in origin (2). The features are narrow and rectilinear in form, comprising two central and perpendicular ditched linears extending the length and breadth of the enclosure on a southwest to northeast axis. Linking with these are a further series of southwest to northeast aligned linear ditches offset by shorter ditches at right angles or in herringbone pattern.
The features are presumed to be a post medieval drainage system with the two central and perpendicular linear features possibly having a dual function as field boundaries.
The site is developed as housing on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
