Full Description

A post medieval extractive pit to the northeast of Stanbridge is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).

The feature comprises a shallow irregular depression 71.4m long by 52.4m wide. It is one of a series of extractive pits (MDOs 40873 to 40877) spread loosely east to west within fields to the northeast of Stanbridge (1). The feature is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (3) where it shown slightly reduced in extent on its northeast side and containing a small group of trees. Its northeast side is very straight and may respect the line of a former historic field boundary (MDO40879). This straight edge is also visible on a 1947 aerial photograph (1). Current Lidar imagery suggests the extractive pit may extend eastwards beyond the line of this former field boundary but whether this predated the boundary or post-dated its removal is unclear - the trees and reduced extent of the feature as indicated on the OS 1st Ediiotn map may reflect its disused state (2).

The northwest side of the extractive pit is shown on the OS 1st Edition map to also be straight and regular. This may be due to it respecting a post medieval trackway (MDO40878) to its northwest

The feature is still visible on current Google Earth imagery and still contains a group of trees. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
