Full Description
An area of narrow ridged and ditched cultivation to the west of Higher Honwybrook Farm is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The narrow ridges are set 4.2m apart with 1.2m wide ditches in between. The features run parallel to each other and extend the length and breadth of an irregular field recorded as a larger historic enclosure on the OS 1st Edition map sub-divided east to west by a trackway which by 1946 is formalised as a modern field boundary (1 and 2). The area of cultivation extends south as far as this boundary.
The features are presumed to be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although they may be later 19th century in origin, formed through steam ploughing.
The site is still open fields on current Google Earth imagery but under plough in some years. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
