Full Description
Two areas of ridged cultivation marks on the northwest side of Dogdean, Colehill, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The features are faint but appear to comprise parallel ridges set broadly around 5m to 6m apart with 1.5m wide ditches in between. The ridges are irregularly spaced but parallel to adjacent historic field boundaries recorded on the OS 1st Edition map.
They are overlain by ditched linear features considered to be post medieval field boundaries and trackways. The features are thought likely to be those of medieval ridge and furrow; two ditched linears running perpendicular to some of the ridges in the southwesternmost area may be medieval headlands formed by the turning of the plough. These may alternatively, however, be later features, possibly drainage ditches or trackways.
The site is within fields on current Google Earth imagery and some features are still faintly visible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
