Full Description
Ditched and banked curvilinear features at Canford Bottom, Colehill, are visible on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-3).
The features comprise a wide band of shorter and longer curvilinear ditches, which run north onto the heathland from the fields south of Cannon Hill. One particularly continuous feature in the centre of the group may form part of a hollow way, suggesting a possible medieval origin. A curvilinear banked feature is also visible, extending north from the heathland edge.
The features are presumed typically to be trackways of medieval or post medieval origin, which may include a medieval hollow way. The banked linear feature is also likely to be part of this group; this feature, and possibly some of the other ditched linears may alternatively represent types of boundary feature, possibly historic field boundaries of medieval or post medieval date.
The features are still visible on current Google Earth and Lidar imagery and were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
