Full Description

A series of irregular ditched earthworks at Canford Bottom, Colehill, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features comprise four irregular ditched depressions roughly 8m long by 4m wide within wide and irregular banks of upcast earth. They are situated on top of a low rise of rough ground bounded within a historic enclosure recorded on the OS 1st Edition map and situated adjacent to each other in a loose curved row. The features are considered likely to be post medieval extractive pits but it is possible they have an alternative, perhaps 20th century military, origin.

The site is under the garden of a large residence on the south side of Middlehill Road on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
