Monument record MDO40764 - Historic cultivation marks, possible post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, Canford Bottom, Colehill, Ferndown Town

Areas of cultivation marks either side of the Southampton and Dorchester Railway Line at Canford Bottom are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are very indistinct but may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although a later origin is also possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

The features comprise parallel ridges set around 5m apart and interset by 1.5m wide ditches.The features are located within historic enclosures present on the OS 1st Edition map; the southernmost of these is a large irregular historic enclosure which has evidently been sub-divided prior to the late 19th century. The evidence for former field boundaries within this larger enclosure on the OS 1st Edition map and on aerial photographs indicate (at least partly) an earlier field pattern of probable medieval origin (1 and 2). Some of these former field boundaries are recorded under MDO40765).

The features are very indistinct but may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although a later origin is also possible.

The site is under the Canford Bottom Roundabout on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
