Full Description
Two areas of cultivation marks to the north of Old Ham Lane, Little Canford, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise parallel ridges set around 3m apart and interset by 1m wide ditches. The features occupy a large irregular historic enclosure present on the OS 1st Edition map and which has evidently been sub-divided prior to the late 19th century. The evidence for former field boundaries within the larger enclosure on the OS 1st Edition map and on aerial photographs indicate (at least partly) an earlier field pattern of probable medieval origin (1 and 2). Some of these former field boundaries are recorded under MDO40765).
The features are considered to be historic cultivation marks of possible post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although given the historic field pattern here an earlier origin is possible.
The site is partly under a modern sawmill and partly within open fields to the east of the A31 on current Google Earth imagery. The features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
