Full Description
Areas of parallel ridges and ditches in fields at Highlands are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise parallel ditched linears within two separate areas; one corresponding with a historic enclosure shown on the OS 1st Edition map (2) and one corresponding with, and bound by, an angled rectilinear field boundary (MDO40642) of probable post medieval origin. The features measure around 4m from ridge top to ridgetop with 1m wide ditches in the former area and 2.5m from ridgetop to ridgetop with 1.5m wide ditches in the latter. The features are presumed to be historic cultivation marks; probably those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although an earlier origin is possible.
The site is partly under housing and partly under a sports ground on the the south side of Badbury Drive on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
