Full Description
Ditched linear features on the south side of Wimborne Minster are visible on 1950s aerial photographs (1).
The features comprise a series of rectilinear and curvilinear ditches that run perpendicular to an irregular field boundary of possible medieval origin, as present on the OS 1st Edition map (2). They broadly correspond with extant historic enclosures on the south side of that field boundary, whose size and form also suggest a possible medieval origin (2). It is considered likely that the features may also be historic field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a later origin is possible. Some shorter ditched features to the west of these perpendicular linears, and on a different SE to NW alignment, may alternatively be post medieval drainage ditches.
The site is under the northeast end ofwhat is now Fairfield Road on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
