Monument record MDO40551 - Historic trackway and possible causeway, Coward's Marsh, Christchurch

Banked and ditched linear earthworks on Coward's Marsh, Christchurch, are visible on 1940s and 1950s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery. The features are considered to be historic trackways and possibly a causeway of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is also possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Banked and ditched linear earthworks on Coward's Marsh, Christchurch, are visible on 1940s and 1950s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1-3).

The features appear to comprise low linear banks that extend from west to east across the southern end of Coward's Marsh, towards the river. Ditched linears alongside the banks are probably trackways and the banks may form part of a causeway across the floddplain. The features may be contemporary or may reflect a long time-depth of use and modification. The features are considered likely to be post medieval in date but may have an earlier, possibly medieval, origin.

The majority of features remain visible on current Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
