Summary

A series of parallel ditched linear earthworks on the Avon river floodplain at Christchurch are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are presumed to be historic drainage features or possibly cultivation marks of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A series of parallel ditched linear earthworks on the Avon river floodplain at Christchurch are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features are faint but appear to comprise short linears set around 7m apart and aligned east to west along the edge of the visible river bank. They are presumed to be historic drainage features or possibly cultivation marks of probable post medieval date, although an earlier origin is possible.

The features are still visible on 2012 Google Earth imagery (2). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
