Full Description
Ditched and banked linear and curvilinear features on the south side of Footners Lane, Burton, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (1 and 2).
The earthworks divide a large historic enclosure present on the OS 1st Edition map (3). The arrangement of trees within this enclosure indicate former division prior to, and out of use by, the late 19th century (3). The features comprise linear and curvilinear banks and ditches that form a series of irregular enclosures, some of which conform with the arrangement of trees, and also possibly trackways that interlink with these. They are considered to be historic field boundaries of probable medieval origin, although a post medieval date for some of the features is possible.
The site is under housing on current Google Earth imagery and the features are no longer visible. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
