Full Description
Banked retilinear earthworks to the southeast of Manor House, Wimborne St Giles, are visible on current Lidar imagery (1).
The features divide historic enclosures with slightly curvilinear boundaries, present on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The enclosures may be part of a field pattern associated with Manor House and probably medieval in origin. The features run on a southwest to northeast axis and align with adjacent historic boundaries (2). They are considered to be historic field boundaries of medieval or post-medieval origin. The two southernmost boundaries appear to pre-date the division of a larger enclosure by the late 19th century (2). The features are similar to further boundaries visible on current Lidar imagery on the west side of Manor House (MDO40489), which may be relict medieval strip field boundaries within an area of former open field. It is possible the southernmost boundaries in this group have a similar origin.
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
