Monument record MDO40414 - Uncertain cropmarks, Knowlton Rings, Woodlands

Please read our .

Summary

A group of curvilinear cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of Knowlton Rings, they have previously been interpreted as Bronze Age round barrows. The twenty-one curvilinear features are between 10m and 50m across but not thought to be bowl barrows; the cropmarks indicate that they are hollows rather than mounds. They are possibly pond barrows but a natural geological or extractive origin is thought more probable. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

SU 0180 0934. Nineteen probable Bronze Age round barrows are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The barrows cover an area from SU 0173 0942 to SU 0198 0928, and appear as roughly circular features with diameters from 10.4m to 24.8m. The photographic evidence seems to indicate the presence of solid mound material, although the barrows have been completely levelled by ploughing. <1>
