Monument record MDO40342 - Possible medieval field boundaries, St Giles's Park, Wimborne St Giles

Substantial banked linear earthworks to the west of St Giles's Park are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery. The features are presumed to be field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a late prehistoric origin is also possible. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Substantial banked linear earthworks to the west of St Giles's Park are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery (1 and 2).

The earthworks comprise rectilinear and curvilinear boundaries that form irregular enclosures, some of which broadly align with the pattern of historic enclosure at this location. One of the boundaries is fossilised by a field boundary present on the OS 1st Edition map and still current in 1946 (1 and 3). The features are presumed to be field boundaries of possible medieval date, although a late prehistoric origin is also possible. One of the boundaries is cut by a post medieval chalk pit (MDO40343) shown as disused on the OS 1st Edition map.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
