Full Description
Banked and ditched linear earthworks to the west of St Giles's Park are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).
The features form enclosures that sub-divide a large field present in 1946 but which was two fields on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The features are on the same alignment as adjacent historic field boundaries but partly underlie a boundary in place by the late 19th century. The features are presumed to be historic field boundaries of probable post medieval date (but pre late 19th century), although an earlier origin is also possible.
The features may be associated with banked earthworks immediately adjacent to the northeast (MDO40341), which extend into their southeast corner. These banks may be of late medieval or post medieval origin, possibly associated with garden landscaping around St Giles's House.
The features are no longer visible on a 2014 aerial photograph (3). They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
