Summary

A sub-circular ring ditch in St Giles's Park is visible as a cropmark on a 1996 aerial photograph. The feature is presumed to represent a barrow of Bronze Age origin, although its small size may indicate a later, Iron Age to Roman, date. The ring ditch is 14.3m in diameter with a 1.5m wide outer ditch and appears to feature a central pit. This feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

Recent aerial photography reveals the cropmarks of possibly two Prehistoric or Roman round barrow sites, visible as ring ditches. One is at SU 0404 1184 (c.8m in diameter with central pit); the other is recorded as SU 01 SW 161. <1-3>

A sub-circular ring ditch in St Giles's Park is visible as a cropmark on a 1996 aerial photograph <4>. The ring ditch is 14.3m in diameter with a 1.5m wide outer ditch. There is a small 1.6m by 1.3m sub-oval hollow slightly off-centre within the feature. The feature is presumed to represent a barrow of Bronze Age origin, although its small size may indicate a later, Iron Age to Roman, date. The feature is still faintly visible on a 2014 aerial photograph <5> and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
