Full Description

A series of banked linear features at Knowlton are visible as earthworks on current Lidar imagery (1). A banked linear feature that probably also forms part of this suite is visible on aerial photographs (2).

The linears run parallel and perpendicular to each other on a broadly southwest to northeast alignment across a 900m by 1050m wide area. The features are presumed to represent an extensive field system of possible prehistoric origin, although a later date is also possible. A further set of banked linears (MDO40156) of similar form and on the same broad alignment are also visible on current Lidar imagery to the southwest, probably indicating one continuous field system. A further field system to the southwest (MDO40151) may also be part of this contemporary agricultural landscape.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
