Full Description
SU 0304 1089. Three Bronze Age round barrows are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The barrows are defined by plough levelled sub-circular mounds: the largest, at SU 0302 1094, is 29.8m in diameter and appears to have traces of a ditch around its northern side; the next, at SU 0308 1088, is 25.6m in diameter; and the smallest, at SU 0304 1089, is 19.2m in diameter. These barrows are associated with the extensive cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. <1>
A sub-circular cropmark at Knowlton is visible on a 1995 aerial photograph <2>. The feature measures around 26.2m in diameter and may represent a Bronze Age barrow. Alternatively, however, it may be a natural feature such as a doline (sink hole). The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
