Full Description
SU 0249 1016. A small rectilinear enclosure of uncertain date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch 5m x 5m, with a gap, possibly an entrance, in the eastern side. Within the enclosure are 4 pits or small features arranged in a square. Traces of a possible external ditch are also visible.
The enclosure is likely to be Prehistoric or Roman, probably associated with ritual or funerary activity. Its form strongly resembles an Iron Age square barrow, and it is located between the Great Barrow (SU 01 SW 106) and the South Henge (SU 01 SW 101) in the Knowlton monument complex. Another similar enclosure or square barrow lies 20m to the south (SU 01 SW 213). <1, 1.1>
A small sub-rectangular enclosure on the southern edge of the Knowlton Barrow Group is visible as a cropmark on 1990s aerial photographs. <2, 3>
The feature comprises a 6m by 6.5m enclosure with a possible entrance on its northeast side. Within the enclosure are four possible sub-circular pits. A rectangular ditched linear is located 3-5m away on the enclosures's west side, enclosing it on its southwest and northwest sides. A second similar enclosure is located 13.5m to the south (MDO40062).
The enclosures may represent square barrows of Iron Age or Romano-British origin.
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
