Monument record MDO40055 - Bronze Age or Roman barrow, Knowlton, Woodlands

A small sub-circular cropmark within the Knowlton Barrow Group is visible on 1970s aerial photographs. The feature may represent a small Bronze Age barrow, although a later, perhaps Roman, origin is also possible. The feature was mapped by English Heritage’s Knowlton Circles Project and digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

SU 0261 1030. A very small round barrow, visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. It is defined by a single circular ditch 7.7m in diameter. The date of this barrow is uncertain. It lies within an extensive cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 105), and may be Bronze Age in date. It is also adjacent to a possible Neolithic enclosure (SU 01 SW 207), and to the outer ditch of the Great Barrow (SU 01 SW 106). Many similar small barrows, which may be Prehistoric or Roman, also appear to the north (SU 01 SW 190). <1>

The feature measures 4.4m by 6.7m in diameter and is located to the west of an oval enclosure of uncertain date, possibly a Neolithic long barrow (MDO40056). The feature may represent a small Bronze Age barrow but an earlier or later origin is also possible.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
