Full Description
A series of possible banked linear features at Knowlton are faintly visible on current Lidar imagery (1).
The features comprise several short sections of linear banks which are broad and slightly irregular in form. They are arranged on southwest to northeast and east to west axiis and do not have any evident relationship to he historic pattern of enclsoure in this area, as recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The features are situated immediately adjacent to the east side of a probable late prehistoric field system (MDO39859) which is also visible on current Lidar imagery (1). The two sets of features may be related although the alignment between the two is slightly at odds.
The features are considered likely to be field boundary banks, possibly late prehistoric in date, although a later origin is also possible. They may be part of the system to the west but this is not clearly identifiable on current evidence.
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
