Full Description
A Bronze Age barrow is visible as a cropmark to the southwest of Knowlton on a 2014 vertical aerial photographs (1).
The barrow measures 22m in diameter. A single ditch is clearly visible along with a possible inner ditch, faintly visible on a 1989 aerial photograph and 3m apart from the outer ditch (2). The feature is one of three conjoined barrows; this one appearing to underlie the southernmost barrow and overlie the easternmost barrow, suggesting it may be the second of the three to be constructed.
The barrow is located within a cropping field and may be vulnerable to ploughing.
The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
SU 0183 1012. Traces of two Bronze Age round barrows are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The westernmost barrow is defined by a single sub-circular ditch 18.4m in diameter, while a second to the east is defined by an incomplete sub-circular ditch 15.6m in diameter. The barrows are part of the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. <3>
