Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark to the southwest of Knowlton on aerial photographs. The barrow is associated with the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. The feature is one of a group of three conjoined barrows (also see MDO40007 and MDO40008) and was mapped by English Heritage’s Knowlton Circles Project and digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

SU 0181 1006. Two contiguous Bronze Age round barrows are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, and have been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. Each barrow is defined by two circular ditches. The larger, at SU 0182 1007, [Note: ie MDO40007] has an inner ditch 13.1m in diameter and an outer ditch 19.2m in diameter. The smaller, at SU 0181 1006, [Note: ie MDO40006] has an inner ditch 12.6m in diameter and an outher ditch 20.3m in diameter. The sides of each outer ditches are incomplete nearest the neighbouring barrow, possibly representing a single ditch around both barrows. The barrows are associated with the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. <1-2>

A Bronze Age barrow is visible as a cropmark to the southwest of Knowlton on a 2014 vertical aerial photographs. <4>

The barrow measures 20m in diameter and comprises two concentric ditches 3m apart. The feature is one of three conjoined barrows; this one appearing the most complete and assumed to be the latest of the three.

The barrow is located within a cropping field and may be vulnerable to ploughing.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
