Full Description
A possible square enclosure and trackway is visible as cropmarks in a field to the northeast of Amen Corner, Gussage All Saints, on a 1989 aerial photograph (1).
The possible enclosure is located within a modern crop field that has seen substantial removal of surrounding historic field boundaries of porobable medieval origin. The enclosure is 53.5m by 60m and has a possible north-south aligned trackway extending from its northwest corner and a second north-south aligned trackway extending south from its south side. This southernmost trackway may be associated with a series of possible trackways to the south (MDO39852), visible on the same 1989 aerial photograph (1).
The possible enclosure is situated around 440m northeast of a probable Iron Age enclosure and field system (MDO39849). Its broadly square rectilinear form may indicate an Iron Age or Romano-British origin, making it part of a wider late prehistoric settled landscape in this vicinity. Alternatively, it may be an agriculatural feature of later medieval or psot medieval origin.
The features are within a modern cropping field and are also visible on a 2009 vertical aerial photograph.
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
