Summary

A small extractive pit on the southern slopes of Blackwater Hill is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery. The feature is cut into the eastern side of an undated mound, possibly a Bronze Age barrow. The feature may be post medieval in date but a modern military origin is also possible, perhaps associated with a military weapons pit. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

A small post medieval or modern extractive pit on the southern slopes of Blackwater Hill is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The feature is of irregular shape and measures 6m by 7m at its widest points. It is cut into the eastern side of an undated mound, possibly a Bronze Age barrow (MDO37989).

It may be post medieval in date but alternatively may have a modern military origin, possible a military weapons pit.

The feature is faintly visible as a low depression on current Lidar imagery (2) but the site is under tree cover and not visible on a 2014 vertical aerial photograph (3).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
