Full Description

Two closely spaced groups of small ditched earthworks visible on Sopley Common on 1940s aerial photographs may be post medieval or early 20th century extractive pits (1). The features comprise two groups of three clustered ditched pits typically 2m to 3m long and bordered by irregular upcast earth banks. The features are located on open heathland to the east of wartime Hurn airfield and a probable ancillary military base (MDO39677) and may alternatively have an early 20th century military origin.

The features are no longer visible on current Google Earth imagery.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
