Full Description
'GROUP (49): LITTLE DOWN (Hilton). 'Celtic' fields covered the whole of Little Down; they are well-marked E. of ST 775034, but they are just traceable N. of it around 77670364, but disturbed by strip ploughing; there are also traces S.W. of it, about 775030, in a field said to have been steam-ploughed before 1914. The area, between 600 ft. and 650 ft. O.D., totals about 25 acres.
Little Down itself is a spur of Middle Chalk capped by Clay-with-flints. The ground falls away from it in all directions except N.W. Despite prominent individual lynchets, a variety of disturbance including extensive shallow quarrying has destroyed the original pattern and has obscured the shape and size of single fields. Some sides were between 30 yds. And 70 yds. Long.
