Full Description

Post medieval drainage on the west bank of the River Avon at Sopley is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The linear ditched features visible in a 1948 aerial photograph (1) appear to be confined to the north bank of the river but this may be due to a lack of clarity in the photograph. A vertical aerial photograph of 2002 shows parallel linear ditches extending northwards as far as a historic ditched field boundary (MDO39704) (2). These may be a later drainage system or re-cut of earlier features but this is not certain.

Some of the features may still be faintly visible on current Google Earth imagery. They were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
