Full Description

A series of narrow ditched linears on Sopley Common are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1).

The features are broadly northeast to south west or north to south aligned and are probably post medieval or earlier trackways or droveways across the open heath, although an early 20th century military origin is also possible. One more substantial ditched trackway is visible towards the northern edge of the group, overlying the narrower linears on an east to west alignment.

Many of the linear trackways are still visible on current Google Earth imagery (2).

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
