Full Description

Post medieval extractive pits, probably chalk pits, on Sopley Common are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1) and on current Lidar imagery (2).

The pits are located on the southwest edge of a concentration of naturally formed pits and depressions in the underlying chalk bedrock of Sopley Common, some of which may also have been worked to some extent. The pits are cut into the base and sides of low rises of ground, forming shallow linear scarps and depressions of varying shape and size.

The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

The extractive pits are within mixed open heath and tree cover in 2017 and are not visible on current Google Earth imagery.
